Instructors
Learn to Skate USA® Instructors are the ones who make all the magic happen!
Are you a skater who would like to begin a career as a coach, help out with classes, or just give back to the ice sports we all love? Begin your training as a Learn to Skate USA® Instructor and feel the joy of introducing others to the feeling of flying that is ice skating!
As a skater who has advanced beyond Basic level classes you may consult your local Learn to Skate USA® director about helping coach classes. If they agree to let you help, either join Learn to Skate USA® as an Instructor or, if you are already a member, change your membership type to Instructor. Complete the compliance items listed above, and then report to your director that you can begin helping with classes. If you are inexperienced as a coach or not as advanced a skater yourself, the director will likely place you with a mentor coach for the classes you teach to help you with your development.
Join Learn to Skate USA® as an Instructor or, if you are already a member, change your membership type to Instructor, and complete the compliance items listed above. Next, ask your local Learn to Skate USA® director if they will hire you or let you serve as a volunteer coach helper to gain experience. Finally, keep learning by listening to experienced coaches, asking questions, and using the resources available to you on this website!
There are no age limits on becoming a Learn to Skate USA® Instructor, but skating directors are encouraged to exercise discretion when assigning coaches to classes. Teens who have progressed through the program to the Free Skate, Hockey, or Speed Skating levels can often begin their coaching education as secondary coaches under a mentor coach during classes.
To coach Learn to Skate USA® group classes you must be a Learn to Skate USA® compliant Instructor. To coach students at Compete USA competitions, coaches may be compliant as either U.S. Figure Skating Coaches OR Learn to Skate USA® Instructors.
Instructors can use the Log In button at the top of the page to access education, lesson plans, and class management strategies. We also host Ahead of the Curve coaching workshops around the country, and you will receive an email if one is happening near you.
